Following last year’s inaugural girls tournament this year’s Championship was even better. Held at the Armitage Sport Centre at Manchester University, 6-8 July, the tournament was expanded from 8 to 12 regional based teams, with new entries from the East and additional teams from the existing regions from across the UK.
In total, 12 teams took part in what turned out to be a brilliant weekend of very high quality hockey and an opportunity for players, coaches, officials and parents alike to meet and make new friends. Strong teams were entered from all parts of the UK and the competition was intense and passionate from the beginning.
Once again, overseeing and officiating all the games was the Leeds Club – a highly experienced team of umpires and match officials. It was another wonderful opportunity for young players to show off their skills and to compete in a fun filled environment against the best players from across the UK.
Eventually the North East met West Panthers in a thrilling final in which the North East retained their grip on the Championship silverware.
South Saxons were a deserved third having played the other team from the South, Saxons South, in the 3/4th play off.
Annabel Cheveley was the outfield player of the tournament and the South Wales Keeper, Grace Diamond, the GK of the Tournament. The organisers wish to thank the Leeds Club, Manchester University, the coaches and parents, and Hockey Today for freely giving their time to make the tournament another amazing success.
